Gameweek is behind us and all went well. Some of the gameweek’s activities are being reviewed and linked to our classrooms by me and my colleagues. Definitely some very useful stuff to use outside the gameweek also.
Talking about me and my colleagues. We had a bit of a problem with the way we are going to tackle multiplication and multiplication tables in our math classes. Solution to our problem *drum roll* gamify it!
Backstory of the game is that these horrible monsters have taken all the numbers from 1-100 as hostages. While numbers are being held hostage no one can use the numbers and the world is slipping into a complete chaos. There is this underground secret society called The Infinite (us, the teachers). The Infinite have found a way to use the numbers, but it’s limited to certain amount of people. Students have been recruited by The Infinet to help them save the numbers from the horrible monsters.
These monsters have only one weakness and it’s correct multiplication with the numbers they are holding hostage. Every time a student solves a multiplication a certain monster loses one health point. When the health points reach zero the numbers are freed from the monsters. I created the monsters by using HeroMachine and the multiplication tables act as their names. After creating the monsters I did a little visual presentation about the backstory. Then I told the students the backstory and off we go!
Multiplication tables are divided into three, so we don’t have to learn all the tables at once. First, we train the tables together, in a small group, in pairs and by ourselves using different kinds of methods. When the student feels that he/she is ready for a multiplication bossfight he/she will take a bossfight quiz. The amount of right answers deducts the monster’s health points. Each of the students must drain the monsters health points at least a minimum amount set by The Infinite (teachers).
For example student A first starts training the tables like Rocky did before every fight. Then when the student feels he/she is ready for a bossfight he/she will take the bossfight quiz. After completing the bossfight (answering the certain amount of calculations right) he/she will get a bossfight diploma.
After all the students have completed all the bossfight and got their awesome bossfight diplomas it’s time to have a party. Monsters are defeated and the world is safe and sound.
Until next time! Game on and level up!
